How to SEO a Thesis Theme

SEO Website

Have you ever done a Google search only to find a great article embedded inside a blog? How did they get that single blog post to be indexed within the search engine? Answer: They did excellent SEO (search engine optimization) work on the individual post or page itself!

Very few WordPress Themes do SEO better than Thesis. Sure you can add All in One SEO Pack but nothing compares to Thesis Theme. Here’s my short video to explaining the three SEO areas to definitely pay attention too.

1. SEO the Custom Title Tag: With Thesis Theme installed, scroll down from the Post Edit Window and find the “SEO Details and Additional Styles.” Here under “Custom Title Tag” you are given 70 characters to add a title tag to your blog post. You might be thinking “Why do I need to do this if I have a good title?” Truthful you don’t if your title is excellent and descriptive (in that case leave this section blank).

HOWEVER, what if your title is vague on purpose. Let’s say you were doing a blog post entitled “My Bad Day” but the reason, which you’ll reveal to your readers later, was you wrecked the car. You could add into your “Custom Title Tag” => My Bad Day – The Day I Wrecked the Car. Custom Title Tags are more descriptive, yet NOT visually seen titles that WILL be indexed from search engines.

2. The Meta Description: This is a short sentence of no more than 150 characters. It tells in plain English, what your blog or web page is about. You will want to use descriptive key words that you would be using if you were looking for your page or post via a directory.

3. The Meta Keywords. This is a comma delimited list of words or phrases that you would use to search for your post or website. You are usually allowed about two to ten in your list. Make sure that you put them in the order of importance for your post.

Two final thoughts: I always mention my name and company in the first few words of the description and keywords sections as I am trying to brand and promote both my name and company. Second, this is adding SEO to your individual page or post and doesn’t take into account your website’s SEO, which you would insert under the “Thesis|Site Option|Home Page SEO”. See my example below of how THIS post was indexed using the tips mentioned.
